Sweet “Ping” of Aluminum Baseball Bats

Aluminum baseball bats have has long been preferred for youth baseball bats. A hitter is able to generate more power swinging a hollow aluminum baseball bat, and send the ball farther into the outfield. Aluminum baseball bats are more powerful than wooden bats. Ever since their beginning in the early 1970's aluminum baseball bats have dominated the youth and amateur adult baseball leagues. Every year new designs and models are introduced, each one claiming to be superior to the previous version. Each new aluminum baseball bat is hyped to have a wider sweet spot, more power, better feel, and higher performance. Almost everyone who has ever used an aluminum baseball bat knows that they are superior to wood bats.

Youth baseball bats have been crafted to maximize the swing of younger people. Aluminum bats and wooden bats are available as youth baseball bats. Most people prefer aluminum to wood. It is important to consider length and weight when purchasing a youth baseball bat. Each league will have basic guidelines for consideration.

A study was performed when aluminum baseball bats were just beginning to assert their prominence, which concluded that the batted ball speed of aluminum baseball bats was about 3.85 mph faster than a wood baseball bat. The study was conducted with several skilled college players over the course of a week. Each player would take several swings with a wood or aluminum baseball bats, rest for 10 minutes, then take several swings with the other bat. Balls were pitched from both pitching machines and regular batting practice pitchers, but pitchers were found to be more consistent. During the testing, the average pitched ball speed was 55 miles per hour. Batted ball speeds were measured using a radar gun. It was proven; aluminum baseball bats hit the ball faster and farther.

It is documented, when connecting with a pitch, a wooden bat will make a “crack” sound. There is nothing that compares with the sweet “ping” of aluminum baseball bats.
